Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure in which fat cells are removed with special hollow instruments, called cannulas, using negative pressure. Liposuction reduces the volume of unwanted fat in selected areas. It can be used for almost any area of the body including, but not limited to, the neck, arms, chest, back, abdomen, thighs, buttocks, upper legs and calves.

When performed properly, liposuction can produce very pleasing results. It can also improve the contours of the body in chosen areas, such as the waist.

Technique

My approach to liposuction is very similar to sculpting. I analyze the problem area in three dimensions and determine approximately how much fat must be removed from every angle in order to create the desired result. My goal is to achieve very smooth and natural looking contours. I also try to use the smallest cannulas whenever possible. This allows me to remove fine layers of fat with each pass. This process enables me to have much more control and allows me to produce more refined and elegant results.

Recovery

The area that is liposuctioned will be sore and numb in the beginning stages. There will also be bruising and swelling. In fact, the swelling sometimes masks the results and the improved contours will not be appreciated until several weeks after the procedure for this reason.

Patients are asked to wear special compressive garments for several weeks. The purpose is to help reduce swelling and accelerate ideal healing. In most cases, the swelling will resolve over 3-6 weeks. Once the swelling disappears, the new contours will become apparent.

Results

This is a young woman who requested liposuction in order to improve the contour of her side and waist. I used small cannulas and meticulously removed fine layers of fat in multiple directions until I achieved the reduction in size and improvement in contour she desired. As you can see in the postoperative picture, the contour of the waist and side are dramatically improved. The postoperative picture was taken approximately 6 weeks after surgery.

This man requested liposuction of his abdomen. The main area that bothered him was the lower abdomen. As you can see in the preoperative pictures, there was significant bulging of skin and fat concentrated in the lower part of his abdomen. I performed liposuction of his abdomen with a focus on the lower part. I carefully removed multiple, thin and even layers of fat in an effort to maximize the contraction of skin back to the normal contour of the abdomen. As you can see in his postoperative pictures, there is dramatic improvement in the appearance of his lower abdomen. The fat was removed evenly creating a smooth contour along the front and sides. The bulging that was present before liposuction is no longer present. The postoperative pictures were taken approximately 6 weeks after surgery.
